Love, what is it good for?

A valentine's day article for Youth United blog.

It is quite uncommon to find loyalty in today’s world. Based on observation, it is

apparent that the majority of our generation simply do not care. Just scroll or skim past

posts on social medias- instagram, twitter, facebook, tumblr, you name it. You are

bound to notice a few sappy posts despising having feelings or discouraging

vulnerability.

Exhibit A:

But why? In the words of EE cummings, “unless you love someone, nothing else makes

sense.”

Valentine’s day is literally a day away but when I shut my eyes and think of love, I

envision BIG flashing signs pointing towards the group of friends that I have. Therefore

I am dedicating this Valentine’s Day to all the platonic relationships and friendships out

there.

As satisfying as it is to be able to be independent, sometimes when the going gets tough ;

we could use a little help or at least someone to turn to for support. Having good

company also reduces the risks of having mental illnesses.

Besides that, ever heard of the phrase “proximity is power”? Friends will contribute

vastly in shaping you as an individual. Even those who you have crossed paths with in

the past and are no longer your friends with.

These are just some of the things my friends do that I am thankful for as it has helped

made my life immensely better.

1. They provide me with unconditional love and support in my dreams and

goals. They are the ones that sees your potential and believes that you could

accomplish whatever you set your mind to do.

2. They often help me see things in new and fresh perspectives. It is a typical

human tendency to make interpretations of facts and circumstances according to our

own beliefs. At times we might find it hard to suspend or alter them. Through

accepting others honest opinions, it serves as a reality check in most situations;

taking into account that they have your best interest in their hearts.

3. They make it easier to cope with the bad times. Eventually you will develop a

sense of sharing, sharing will not be limited to just tangible things. You will have

conversations about your ideas, dreams, fears, insecurities and in return they will

give you reassuring advices to encourage positive changes to help with personal

growth.

All in all, Valentine’s day is definitely not just about the extravagant dates or marked up

materialistic goodies. It is a day to celebrate love - in any form. However, it is preferable

to nurture love constantly not just for the sake of an overrated day in a year.
