Podcast Outline: Sexual Libido

Topic: Sexual Libido

Hook/Intro: Early this year (January 13, 2019) NBC news published an article about ‘maintenance sex’. It claims to strengthen relationships amongst married couples.

How maintenance sex came about is actually from lowered/nonexistent sex drive affected by social factors.

Origins of maintenance sex

  • Solution for the inevitable decrease in sex frequency in long term relationships.

  • Maintenance sex basically means having sex even when neither one party feels like doing it.

How maintenance sex helps?

  • Fosters bonding and emotional intimacy to improve sex drive and passion

Problems faced and how it serves as a solution

  • No initial sexual desire

- Couples often face the problem of not being in the mood, even though they start off reluctant it gets easier after getting right down to it.

  • Partners have unsynchronised sex drives

- Having regular maintenance sex is beneficial for the party that wants it more often than the other or when one wants it but the other one does not because after all IT STILL IS consensual sex.

  • Verbal/ Psychological intimacy before sexual intimacy

- Participating in ‘maintenance sex’ encourages couples to openly discuss their needs/desires.

Introduce topic - Sexual Libido

Sexual Libido can be defined as an individual’s overall sexual drive or the desire for sexual activity.

A person sex drive can be affected by 3 factors (biological, psychological and social), the scenario we discussed earlier about how maintanence sex came about falls under the social factor.

Moving forward, we’ll discover more about the…

Biological & Psychological factors

  • Hormonal changes may take a toll on your sex drive

Birth control

For females, birth control could possibly be the perpetrators behind this. There has been cases reported whereby birth control messes up the testosterone levels, although not all are affected.

Other medications

Besides birth control there are other medications that are able to lower testosterone levels too, such as high blood pressure, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), anxiety and depression medications.

  • Diet

According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, a person with high cholesterol could face the difficulty of getting aroused and even achieving orgasm. To put it simply, cholesterol build up and blocks the arteries thus there is lesser blood flowing, in results to that, lesser sensations in genitals making it harder to get off.

So be sure to eat your fruit and veggies. Avoid consuming excessive amounts of animal fats and lay off the whole-milk products for the sake of your sex lives.

We discussed the downside of medications and diet, let’s uncover the positive side of things.

Let's talk about the wonderful works of APHRODISIACS. What the hell is that you might ask?

Aphrodisiac is defined as a food or drug that arouses sexual instinct, brings on desire or increases sexual pleasure or performance. Its name is derived from the greek goddess of love “aphrodite”.

  • Consuming aphrodisiacs

There are tons of options to choose from and its mind blowing just how much these foods, nuts, herbs, seafood benefits to our sexual health.

Eg: Chili peppers stimulate endorphins

Banana triggers testosterone production & elevate energy levels

Honey regulates estrogen and testosterone levels

Strawberries improve blood flow

Oysters contain zinc, good for sperm production

Questions host can ask:

  1. Have you experience a sudden increase/decrease in your sexual libido? What affected it?

  2. Are you on oral contraceptives? Has there been any issue in compatibility with certain brands?

  3. Would you give “maintenance sex” a go? What are your thoughts about it?

  4. Have you heard of any of these aphrodisiacs food benefits?
